Hong Kong Jockey Club – Sha Tin

We’re either lucky enough to be able travel or spend time dreaming of travelling, it’s a way to escape the day to day grind.

We’ve been privileged enough over the years to have traveled to a number of countries around the world like South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Mauritius and England. Now, when we decide to travel, we always look to see if there’s a race track we can visit as part of our trip.

Hong Kong Jockey Club – Sha Tin

Part 2

Heading to the track

Whilst the track is a little way out of Hong Kong itself it is really very easy to get to and you can book taxi’s and limo’s or catch one of the many bus options.

General admission is between $9 and $25 depending on the day, with themed race days being a bit more expensive. You can book tours through your travel agent who will be able to offer you a number of pricing options. My advice, if you’re going to go to Sha Tin, then do it in style and book a corporate suite. Discover Hong Kong have a great package available, and whilst it’s a little expensive at around $180AUD, the inclusions give you a real Hong Kong Jockey Club experience – Round-trip transfers to the venue, admission to the Visitors’ Box, buffet meal with unlimited beverages, welcome pack with a racing program and $30 betting voucher, betting orientation, guided tour to the parade ring and winning post, and a discount at the gift shop. The Corporate suites offers you outstanding views across the course, delicious buffet with both eastern and western options and ‘to die for’ desserts and the best seats in the house.  I would also suggest heading to the gift shop or ordering from the catalogue as they have some great souvenirs that don’t take up a lot of room, like my pen in the photo below, ties, cuff links and jewellery.

Betting

Betting is very similar to Australia however they do have different terminology for some betting options, for instance a Trifecta is called Tierce, but your each way bets and Quinella’s are the same. The beauty of the corporate day is that you get guidance on how to place a bet and what to say. The pricing is very similar to Australia as well, while it looks like I’m spending $60.00 on a trifecta (tierce) when you work out the exchange rate, it’s actually about $6.00 AUD, the same as what we would pay for a 100% trifecta bet with 3 horses.

A day at the Hong Kong Jockey Club is one you won’t ever forget. We still rave about it to our friends and encourage them to go whenever they are in the region. There is also the option to head to Happy Valley which is on Hong Kong Island week nights which is just as fantastic as Sha Tin. We will be sharing a blog on Happy Valley in the coming weeks.
