Today we were lucky enough to catch up with another Gold Coast trainer, Kelly Doughty and we asked her a few questions about her about training, her favourite horses and does husband Gary do his fair share.
Kelly, has had many years of success, predominantly on the Gold Coast and Brisbane and also in Sydney. Kelly’s very well known and respected within the industry and a champion for all women in the racing industry.
How many horses do you currently have on the books?
I would have around 50 on the books, and I have approx 18 – 20 in work at a time
When buying a horse or taking on one to train, what characteristics do you look for?
I like a horse that is a good walker, nice and round in the hind quarters
Which horses has given you the most success?
I’ve had quite a few good horses, my best horses have been:
- Port Call winner of 13 races,
- Little Brown Horse winner or 14 races and listed winner,
- Tierqualo winner of 9 races, listed winner who also won his only race when I took him to Rosehill
- Black Cash a winner of 7 races and winning at Flemington on Oaks the Greys Race
- Morning Captain winner of 8 races and listed winner
What is your life motto?
If you are going to do something, do it properly.
Everyone loves Little Brown Horse, when did you know she had that something special that makes her a good race horse?
Little Brown Horse was a wild child all her life, as a 2yo she was not a nice filly, but after her first gallop we knew we had something special, so we said we would put up with her moods
What or who inspired you to get into horse training?
My Father George Blacker who is a Trainer in Tasmania, he won all the Feature races in his career and many premierships and was inducted into the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame
What time do you get up in the morning and do you manage to take any time off?
We start work at 3.40am each morning, and time off is very rare, my husband Gary and I usually have to have a couple of days away separately, so we don’t worry about the horses
What do you like to do in your spare time, if and when you get any?
I enjoy just watching a great movie when I can, something that is nice and easy to watch.
How much does Gary help out with the horses?
Gary is a big help to me, he rides all my main gallops each day. Gary being a very successful Jockey has so much knowledge and can tell me exactly how a horse feels when he rides it.
If you could have any 3 people over for dinner, dead or alive, who would they be?
I would say Princess Diana, what a wonderful beautiful woman she was, my sister in law Maree Blacker, who sadly drowned in the Samoa Tsunami, and Country singer Tammy Wynette
