If you’re sensible a day at the races doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.
Quite often you don’t need to buy a whole new outfit, have a look at what is in your wardrobe and think about what you can add to it to create a new look. Add flowers, sequins or a new jacket to add a new dimension. A new fascinator with a different hairstyle can lift an existing outfit from last year to on trend.
If you are looking for something different try used clothing stores that stock higher end fashion, you may find a gem that just needs a little adjustment.
At this time of the year look for sales at your favourite stores and you could find a bargain.
Block colours are big this year, team a couple of colours together and accessories to get the runway look without the couture cost. Belts, shoes and a clutch are a great way to add some bling without going overboard.
Above all else remember you are at the races and will probably have a few drinks, so dress appropriately with longer hem lengths and lots of tape if you are wearing a shear top. Costume jewelry is also a great idea, leave the expensive diamonds at home.
Hats and fascinators can be very expensive however there are alternatives to spending big money on a headpiece. Many girls are making their own headpieces using flowers, netting and feathers, keep it simple and tasteful for a great look.
So how do you finish of your new look… a pair of fantastic shoes! A couple of things to keep in mind:
- If you are contemplating wearing a new pair of shoes buy them ahead of time and wear them around the house to soften them up
- Plastic shoes are a no no, they will give you blisters
- A great pair of wedges or something not so high
- Take a larger clutch and put in a pair of fold up ballet flats – I never go to the races without them – if it’s a long walk to the taxi rank you can make it without the agony
If you are going to splurge on something make it a comfortable pair of shoes.
Whatever you spend on your race day outfit, be yourself and wear something that will not restrict your ability to have fun and enjoy yourself.
