JODIE TERZIS

I grew up in Adelaide and moved to the Gold Coast in 2000 and went on to complete a Diploma in Tourism which led me to working in Event Management for many years. I also completed my Certificate III in Financial management and have worked in this industry for the last 9 years.
My interest in horse racing started 25 years ago in Adelaide and when a work colleague was heading to the sales to buy shares in a horse, to be trained by his mate Wayne Hawkes, and asked if I wanted to buy in. I had always enjoyed a day at the races but didn’t really know how to put a bet on back then! We went along to the sales but didn’t end up with a horse, what I did end up with was a sneak peek at the other side of the industry – the horses, the stables, the training.
My husband is a keen punter and in his younger years part owned a couple of horse in Wollongong, however they never got to the track and raced. He has always enjoyed looking at the breeding, the form guide and following different horses and over the years this has rubbed off on me. When we go to the track or watch the races I would ask more questions about the horses, why they did this, what does this mean etc. When I first started to have a bet I started out by picking names that I liked or that meant something to me – any horse with the name of our kids/friends, Champagne or chocolate – and I still do to this day and it’s amazing how many win. My husband can’t believe it, he has studied the form and I just pick a winner from its name! He always asks me now what I like in a race to include in his trifectas…just in case!
Last year we decided to buy shares in a couple of horses. We wanted to become involved to learn more about another side of the racing industry, experience the thrill of having our horse run and to enjoy sharing happy times with our friends that were also shareholders. We thought if one of our horse had a win it would be a bonus – after 12 months we have had one horse win a couple of races!!!
In 2015 we went to Melbourne Cup for the first time and spent 10 fantastic days over the carnival attending all four race days and other associated events. It was very interesting speaking to a lot of the guys there and asking why their wives/girlfriends didn’t join them. The responses varied from – the guys not wanting them there to the ladies didn’t know enough about the races but would like to spend more time with their partners. It got me thinking about how I could share my knowledge and assure ladies that they don’t have to be experts to still enjoy the races and having a couple of bets.
Magic Millions Gold Coast 2016 was the turning point, Merrin and I were sitting at the sales after a big day of racing – and more than a couple of glasses of bubbles – and spoke to a group of ladies about the racing, fashion and betting. Pink horse Racing was born!
